*The above picture is dedicated to the fallen deer I encountered this week. I hope that you are in a field with a perfectly healthy body eating all of your favorite foods!
And so it goes...
According to Merriam Webster, a nudge can be defined as a way to "urge into action" or to "prod lightly". The following contains various ways that nature has found a way to "prod" me into action after contemplating many things in this second stage of life.
I have been traveling down this road of animal education since 2010 and recently posed the question, "Is this still my purpose?"
Nudge 1-
I walked outside to check the mail upon returning from work and looked over at a neighbors fence. To my surprise, I saw a vulture perched right on top. I then surveyed the landscape and spotted another high on top of a street light. Running into the house, I grabbed my camera and returned outside to photograph these beautiful birds. Calmly making my approach, I noticed these birds were eating something very close to the road and of course, the cars were literally whizzing by. So, for their safety, I decided to move the food. While getting ready to move the prey for the predator, I was stopped by the person whose yard I was just about to throw some carrion into. Oops! I then proceeded to give this man more education than he bargained for, but now he can go on to educate another about why the vulture looks the way it does and what it was eating. Leaving the scene, I gave thanks for the moment. Perhaps this is my purpose after all.
Several weeks later, it had been a while since I'd written or taken pictures. "Is this something I should still pursue?"
Nudge 2-
I decided to once again check the mail. Maybe I should just hang at my mailbox? Anyway, I'll continue. When headed back into the house, I caught a glimpse of something that had just landed on the neighbors mailbox. Flying into the house and grabbing the camera, I stepped out hoping what I saw was still there. IT WAS! So, for the next 30 minutes, I hung out in the rain with a juvenile red-tailed hawk. At least 50 pics were taken as he cast a pellet, stood on one foot, and even checked me out. Not a bad way to spend a moody Sunday. Off I went to check out the photos, but first a prayer was said to honor the bird and to give thanks for this encounter. Looks like this is still worth pursuing.
On Saturday, the built up chaos revealed itself with tears and the question of, "What am I doing?"
Nudge 3-
I had returned with my dog on a walk. Up the driveway we headed when I was stopped in my tracks. There, right in front of my feet was the feather that had once belonged to a barred owl. The feather was slightly stained with the juice from a berry. As I'm sure you know, not from the owl, but I digress. Finding feathers symbolize many things to many people, but to me this feather meant finding wisdom, purpose, and growth. Whatever it is, I'm doing it with gratitude.
To ALL of the beautiful creatures who walk this earth, I see you, I feel you, and yes, I will continue to fight for you in some way.
In the end, if you are ever questioning your purpose, be still. The more quiet you become, the more things will be revealed. Follow your heart and keep leading with love and light my friends.
With gratitude,
Alisa
